Color Meanings in the Tarot Cards

The use of color as a symbol is as old as time. For example, most of us associate blushing pink cheeks with embarrassment, yellow for the cleanliness, blue for boys, red for Valentine’s day. How or why these colors became associated with these symbols is not clear.

Colors are a major part of interpreting the cards. They will trigger associated words for you. Look at the white, black and grey on the High Priestess card. Bava (white) means purity. Java (black) means distain. The column is grey representing the blend of the white and the black, purity and disdain. The mixted color becomes grey which means wisdom.

The Sun card is awash with yellow and orange. Yellow means a pure, high resonance of energy. Orange is the action energy for continuing one’s spiritual growth. On the Star card, the blue can remind you of the heavens, which is her spiritual value and her intent. The white stars on the card are spiritual goals accomplished.

Every deck is different in the way colors are used. Some decks use no more that five colors. Some use only certain hues, such as the browns and gelds of the Morgan Greer deck. These cards are still pleasant to look at but they do lack the rich expression of symbolic color found in other decks, such as the Rider-Waite deck or the Universal deck.
The richness of the color of this deck is one of the reasons I encourage the use of this deck for learning Tarot. The colors are an additional clue to interpreting the card and give additional intonations for the querant.

Begin now to notice the colors of your world and what they mean to you. Surround yourself with the color energy you want or need to improve your life. As you use them in your every day life, you’ll learn to associate those energies with the Tarot cards.

The following is a list of basic colors and their meaning. We will use these in learning the Tarot cards. Enjoy the energy of each color!
